The three most common are:
1. For such cases, most smart trainer apps have a Powermatch feature (Goal: An external power meter transmits watt measurement via ANT+ to the smart trainer, which then sends it to icTrainer). Such hardware-side Powermatch is often faster than a software-side Powermatch in an application.
Example Wahoo: https://www.smartbiketrainers.com/how-to-enable-the-wahoo-kickr-snap-powermatch-feature-and-why-you-should-do-it-5726
2. You can also add your external power meter in icTrainer under Settings as POWER for power measurement and then use the smart trainer only as TRAINER for power control.
3. Experts simply create two users in icTrainer (one with a smart trainer and one with a power meter) and can then measure both values in parallel. It often turns out that the two devices don't measure that differently. You can then decide which device you trust more… "}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Why is icTrainer (program file/setup file) detected as suspicious by my antivirus scanner?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Some antivirus scanners initially detect executable files (.exe) as suspicious and then subject the file to a separate check.
It often turns out that the two devices don’t measure that differently. You can then decide which device you trust more…

Why is icTrainer (program file/setup file) detected as suspicious by my antivirus scanner?

Some antivirus scanners initially detect executable files (.exe) as suspicious and then subject the file to a separate check. That’s why maximum values of 1500/2200 W make a lot of sense in our opinion.
– Are specific features important to you? –> For example, if you want to use the device away from home without a power connection. Or you ride longer Workouts and need a flexible base to relieve your glutes. Are you preparing for the Ötztaler and want the incline to adjust? And much more.
– What budget do you want to spend? -> Everything from €300 to €3,000 is possible. But from €500, you can already get really good smart trainers.

Our only clear recommendation is:
If you want to buy a smart trainer, get a direct-drive device right away (i.e., one where the rear wheel is removed and the chain runs directly over the smart trainer). Smart trainers where only a roller presses against the rear wheel are too loud and simply don’t feel good during intervals.

Why are elevation gains counted so differently?

Depending on which device or software you use to look at the same route, the elevation gain figures vary greatly? This is primarily due to calculation methods. Of course, the barometer on one device might be more accurate than on another. But this doesn’t make that much of a difference. Nor is the reason whether the device is currently calibrated or not. Elevation gains are counted relatively; without calibration, only the starting and ending altitudes are “wrong.” What’s more crucial is when an elevation gain actually counts!
If a route is only uphill, meaning every measurement point is higher than the previous one, it’s quite simple. The elevation gain is the highest minus the lowest measurement point. But what if a route is undulating, so a measurement point is sometimes a few centimeters below, sometimes above the last measurement point? Here, depending on the device/software, there’s a threshold for when an elevation gain even counts. This is often, but not always, around 3 meters. This means if you ride 2.99m “uphill” and then 2.99m “downhill,” this is not counted as elevation gain but as a flat route with 0 meters of elevation gain; the same applies to 10cm uphill, 10cm downhill, 10cm uphill, 10cm downhill… This is often where the logic lies in the procedures where Strava and GarminConnect “recalculate” the elevation gains and arrive at the values we are familiar with.
And this is precisely why, on proper climbs, the values are very close together, but on undulating or flat routes, they are far apart. On a relatively flat route, the difference between centimeter-accurate addition of elevation gains and smoothing is in the range of a factor of 3, and here the difference is smaller the better the barometer is.
Here are a few comparisons based on a route ridden with a Garmin bike computer from Challenge Roth (first lap plus descent, i.e., 93.6 km, the second lap is only just under 85km long), which illustrate this very well:
The resulting GPX file has 11,236 individual points. If you calculate the elevation gain to the nearest centimeter, you get 1,397m (a). If you remove all elevation changes smaller than 3m again, you get 701m (b).
The original route on GarminConnect with elevation correction comes to 803m (c) and without elevation correction (i.e., barometric) to f=709m (d). We see that (b) and (d) are only 8 meters apart. This should be a realistic value.
icTrainer smooths the route in GPX mode with the average of every 15 seconds, resulting in 751 points with centimeter-accurate 804m (e) and, again, all elevation changes smaller than 3m removed, 699m (d). Thus, the value (d) from icTrainer almost exactly matches the values (b) and (d) mentioned above.
If you now upload the route ridden in icTrainer to GarminConnect, you get 901m there with elevation correction (g) and 702m without elevation correction (h). Here, too, we see that value (h) is very close to (d), (b), and (d).
You can see the wide range of results here. Challenge Roth states 1,200m for the total route, which would mean 625m for the first lap plus descent and 575m for the second lap. This figure is calculated significantly lower again.
Similar information can also be found in the following article on the same topic.

Why are speeds counted so differently?

Regarding speed, we calculate it based on your pedaled wattage, weight, height, sport, etc.
For this, we use the following formula: http://www.kreuzotter.de/deutsch/speed.htm
This is, for example, significantly more accurate than a speed sensor that doesn’t know this data.
It is important that the data on the device you are using is entered correctly and that the appropriate user profile is activated.

What does the “ic” in icTrainer stand for?

Shhh….. originally, the software was actually called Indoor-Cycling-Trainer.
Even though we now enable you to use many more devices 😉

   More GPX videos?
